Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

Wow Nice - and here I bring my laptop home ever night for years. (I tried VMWare but it was too much overhead.) Speaking of which any minimum system recommendations for this?
From the post aboves look any recommendations on routers and IP setups?

Im tryin 2 run to copies of d2,this is my situation:
-i have all the necessary cd keys
-i do not have my expansion cd at the moment, however, i have the expansion installed on my comp, with all the extra files (video.mpq etc).

Is there some file that has the currently used cd key within it, or something along those lines? If there was i could make a second copy of the directory, and put my second cd key into this new directory?

Basically i cant do the installation process to make the second d2 directory :undecided:

The files which contain the keys are inside the MPQ files, and encrypted as well (if, even if you extract them you cannot view them without the aid of a third party program). So it's not really a simple matter of just switching out files.

My gf tried this...and got both CD-Keys banned...shes getting a "disabled from Realm use"

Any thoughts?

I haven't yet been banned for using it. Did she use the fast user switching functionality, or some other program to allow 2 copies to run?

@BobCox, my old computer was a PII 300, 512MB Ram, and was about 4-5 years old, and it was able to run 2 copies without any problems.

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

im curious to know if this can work on a wireless router. when i switch my user accounts it seems to disconnect; is there a way around this?

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

its most likely a windows setting

start -> control panel -> network connections
select your wireless connection
file -> properties -> [configure] -> power management tab
uncheck allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

Alright so I've tried doing this 3 times, and all 3 times have been failure. I've had no problems with actually installing it or opening it at all, or disconnecting.. so far. But my problem is that when I do the update patch. It says this :

The program was unable to find a file required for patching

File name: C:\Program Files\DiabloII\d2exp.mpq

If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support

Now I personally haven't been able to find anything about this, and I thought I'd come back here, and see if anyone else has had this problem. Any suggestions?

Edit: I just tried copying the d2exp.mpq from my other Diablo 2 folder (my original folder), and tried updating again, but nothing happened.

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

im having difficulties i can locate the device management tab; im runnign XP but its he media Edition so im not sure if thats the problem or not

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

If you're using a Dell, do NOT let the dell wlan control the network settings... also. it might help to statically configure your IP address. Just use the windows wireless connection program.

So I ended up figuring out my problem. I had changed the DiabloII folder to "DiabloII (second game)" so I wouldn't get confused.. I switched it back to "DiabloII" and it's working just fine. :)

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

how would i do that? im fairly new to advanced computer setting so id pretty much need basic step by step instructions

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

run the other instance of D2 in a VM if you're afraid to DL cracks (and you'd be afraid to do that with good reason).

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

Don't need to use a VM if you can use fast user switching.
To set IP address manually right click 'My Network Places' choose your connection you want to use, then right click it.
Choose status, then go to the support tab.
Click Details under connection status, then move this to the side of the screen :).
After this go back to the connection you chose, then right click it and choose properties this time.
Scroll down and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), while it's highlighted choose properties (or you can double click it).
Click the 'Use the following IP address' radio button and type the information in from the connection details you have up, then click 'OK' and you're done.

I'm really bad at typing up guides, but I hope you get this one :).

I'm having a problem doing this because when I have to type the information in from the connection details... there's nothing on there. It's just blank.

Also, are you supposed to do this with both of the users that you'll be using?

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

only the one.

i jsut figured it out again.

when you check network status click support > properties. ------- the info you will be writing is there

next open another network connection for the connection type then select inthe white window there with 3/4 differnet thing the one that says internet protocal to make it turn blue then click >properties

then you will click use the following ip and move the subnet mask; gateway; and ip address from the first detail box

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

An alternate way to get your local IP address is to:

Go to Start --> Run --> type 'cmd' (or 'command' for Win98) and press Enter. A black box should appear. In the command prompt box type 'ipconfig' (or 'ipconfig /all' if you want more information). This'll list the current internal IP address of your network adapter, assuming the router isn't set to bridge mode. This screen will also show you your subnet mask and default gateway, which you'll need to put in manually as well.

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

I just reinstalled WinXP (yesterday). Before the new installation of XP, all worked fine with the two User Konti and I could rush myself :)

Problem:( Now when I switch to User B, myUser A is going "off" or "abrupted" I can't do a thing, cant move mouse or do anything on the computer. Meantime when I open (ctrl-alt-del="windows joblist"? dont know that in english)) I see that user A is "non-active or "abrupted".

All in all I cant make another User account on my computer, help me
