Regarding normal set items, check the drop rates of the Cow King in normal, using ATMA's drop calculator (see my link). He has surprisingly high chances to drop some of the rare normal set/unique items which are very hard to find elsewhere.

I collect uniques and sets, must be selffound though.
Sets (missing 1): Cowking boots. (I can't say I like running cows though).
Uniques (missing 9): Griffon's Eye, Darkforce Spawn, Death's Fathom, Tyrael's Might, Stormlash, Heaven's Light, Astreon's Iron Ward, Mang Song's Lesson, Azurewrath.

in fact I have to psyche myself up to discard low gems after I hit about mid-Nightmare.

I still pickup any gem that drops, then just before logging of b.net I'll transfer them all to my gem processing mule, he cubes and groups them.

Hmm, that might be a good idea. I've also been meaning to grab a char with super-high MF and then rampage through the Den of Evil in normal or something a few times - the really, really low uniques like bucklers, quilted armour, short bows and so on are hard to find because by the time you start dropping sets and uniques they're a rare drop.

But they're so cool! I still get excited when I see a golden dirk drop from Meph.

I had an eth one, but I gave it away. I had no room, it was either the diggler or the Tome of Townportals. Needless to say, I kept the townportals.

It is a game of chance. The chance that a good name is availible is like 1/100, so when you come up with something like "hey, wonder if anyone has this one?", try! I have a bunch of good ones, Brill has more though, and Mart...

I tend to collect low-level sets (clvl reqs under 15 or so), level up my mules a bit, and put the sets on them. Just so my mules will look different. Plus, trying to find a Sigon's shield is a lot easier than trying to find a CoA, so I "win" more often. If your goals are low, they're easier to accomplish.

That's funny, i wanted to do the same exact thing a while ago, i just didn't have the time i guess.

I like to collect rares, either the very good ones or just the weird ones, like that phase blade with +2 pally, fool's and can't remember what else..

I like rare assasin claws too, but they always come out with sucky mods.
