Thoughs on getting "hacked" from Experience. ifr

i dunno. i kinda wonder if there's more to it than just people not watching their computers for trojans (or anything else), especially considering how it's condensed around west. if was just trojans, keyloggers, or w/e wouldn't it be more spaced out?

It is definetely suspicious. It's hard to imagine that there could be a forum member(s) here abusing information about people on US west because that is the realm they play on. It is definetely possible, though. What can be done before more tragedies occur? Ok, maybe the word "tragedies" is a bit over dramatic...nah, I think it works.

Lots of people use limewire I'm sure. I have a hard time believing this is how you got hacked, even though tecnically it is possible. We need to get down and figure out whats going on. I've never seen so many hacking stories before on this forum, some even coming from very experienced players.

Those on US west, should you be worried?

I don't know. It's starting to feel like the plague around here.

I don't even use Limewire and the last time i chatted on MSN is like a year ago....

So I still do not know where i go wrong.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I would have guessed West was safer than East - guess not. I had a similar thing a few months back. I'd almost forgotten about it - had to go dig up the old thread just to see that it was only July. I guess time does fly. I remember being glad (in a weird sort of way) that I wasn't the only this happened to.http://www.purediablo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=477927

I will say that I've bounced back pretty quick. So long as you still have the char and a few items, you can come back from this too. I took a few days off and didn't think I'd get back into the game again myself. Then the more I posted here and the more I started thinking about rebuilding, and how to do it, the more I wanted to play again. I probably wan't out for too long before I got back on the horse. MFing really goes a lot quicker the 2nd time around.

Yes we need to take individual responsibility when it happens, but it still sucks. We all have a lot of internet behavior that isn't safe. We don't change passwords as often as we should; people open attachments (even in just the preview pane) from people we don't know. (This doesn't really even matter as most of the good backdoors will look like they're coming from people we do know.) We leave our computers on at night, and when was the last time you shut your cable down when you weren't using it? There's things you can do to keep the ship afloat, but you can never patch all the holes. There's plenty of holes out there that most people just don't know about yet. Anyone that does think they're safe if just fooling themselves. I'm not trying to say that we all need to be paranoid or anything, but no one is ever as cautious as they should be. I will say that a good recovery play is just as important as trying to prevent getting hacked in the first place. Sorry kinda went off on a non-d2 tangent for a while. In case you're wondering I do information assurance/information security for a living. Sorry if I tend to ramble for a while.

I guess I was actually surprised that people would make an effort to hack a video game. But I suppose that most "hacking" out there is just people who think they're playing a game. Most of the time they don't think they're breaking federal laws - after all he just stole some D2 stuff right? (The law doesn't protect your D2 items, but it is illegal to install a backdoor on someone.) Maybe we should be happy that all they steal is some D2 stuff, not anything actually valuable. But that's little consolation.

I just wanted to say that I completely understand how you feel. About a month or so ago one of my more minor accounts was hacked. Admittedly the password for that particular account wasn't the most difficult one in the world, but I just never dreamed anyone would spend long hours trying to hack a video game account. Especially when accumulating wealth has become so easy on US-east L (Seriously, when you can get HRs for pgems and other minor items you know it's not horribly difficult).

Overall it wasn't too bad because, as said before, it was a minor account that I had just begun putting decent items on. In all I lost a full tal set, 35FCR spirit, and about 5 annis...ironically they left a gul and pul rune and about 15 keys. Regardless, I couldn't help but feel a little violated and cynical about the whole game. As you felt, I felt like I had invested my time and energy into finding this gear just to have it stolen from me...even if it is "just pixels and code." To be honest, if someone had hacked one of my main accounts I would almost definitely quit because it has taken me years (literally) to accumulate this "wealth" and I doubt I would want to redo all of it again. I also agree with your sentiment about accepting charity; regardless, I had grown a bit attached to my gear and the fact that I found or traded for pretty much all of it. That alone would probably lead me to quit if I incurred a serious loss. I'm truely sorry for your loss of items. Although almost everyone is saying stay and remake, rebuild, and reacquire it may be a good time to reconsider what else you want to do instead of investing even more time into a video game. Most of us are so invested the only way we would quit is to be hacked. Again, sorry to hear about it.

....The only downside is that if you were a packrat before, the infinite storage space and ATMA's ease of use will further encourage that behavior....

And I am a packer. It is fun to find a build you want and not have to spend two years getting the gear. I had always saved 15 max damage jewels (they just seemed like they might be good for something) and then much later discovered low level dueling. I was planing on a level 18 Paladin. Maybe later after the ('shock' is too strong of a word) um, dismay, wears off and perhaps I will try it.

Back to your post. I didn't realize ATMA offered such huge storage. I am intrigued now. Only thing is I rather enjoy some of the things on Ladder and the the Realms that Blizzard seems to not want single players to enjoy.
Also, I have two computers and self rush a lot.

Cooked, sorry to hear about your lost. If you wanna play Single Player instead, I'll be glad to meet you at the SPF.

You also interest me. I have seen a some of your posts and would love to game with you. Something tells me you would be ... courteous, well more than that; a respectful player, I think.

Magechick and JME. I read each of your posts twice and appreciate your comments.

General comment. I still have some wealth (Another reason why I wouldn't accept "charity.") left as I posted earlier. Right now I just don't feel like spending time with the game. Some of this malaise has to do with things going on in my life, things which I hope to find answers too as it is some of the most difficult parts of life to endure.

I restricted myself to 3 mule accounts. Two for armor and weapons and one for small stuff, charms and leveling gear. That works quite well. When I want to store something, I have to throw away something else - and I often wonder how much crap I'm hoarding or e.g. how many LoHs I have on my mules.

I use +15 and +9 maxdmg jewels to make weapons to level my characters, as I'm always doing it the hard way, with no rushing... well, nearly no rushing - for melee characters I clear the CS with a sorc or zon and a few characters get help in a handful of tough situations.

That reminds me to keep the next few Sol runes for a nice leveling military pick...

Sounds like me. A friend of mine was looking through my ATMA stashes yesterday and asked me why I was holding onto 12 complete Sigon sets and also what the 400ish rare assassin claws were for. I had no idea myself but told him, "They might be good for something."

Yeah, the storage capacity for ATMA is virtually infinite. If you like to keep things tidy, you can dump some of your stashes into a zip folder and store it on a flash drive (the files are very small). You can do the same thing to back up all your goodies and characters in case your computer bites it too. You have to be careful not to accidently dupe anything - fortunately ATMA has a built in dupe detector so it's easy to scan for boo boos.

I honestly felt the same way when I was considering making the switch. I am very happy with Single Player but YMMV. BNet and SP both have their pros and cons.

You can still rush/hellforge with two computers and a router. Plug in, set up a TCP/IP game and off you go. I'm not sure how the SPF community here feels about about self-rushing, so it would be a good idea to read or ask some questions before diving in - especially if you plan to make use of the SPTF or play in forum MP games/tournaments.

Whatever it is, I hope everything works out for the best. If you ever feel that you need someone to talk to, my PM/Email inbox is always open.
