Diablo 2 Resurrected Release Date Page Updated: 5 April 2021
Diablo 2 Resurrected Release Date
While Blizzard has not pinned down an exact Diablo 2 Resurrected release date, they have stated that they expect the game to ship sometime around November/December 2021. This was a lot earlier than some fans had expected and reiterates that the remaster had been in development for some time.
The game is being developed by remaster specialists Vicarious Visions which have since been merged with Blizzard in Irvine. The team has been working on the game for some time prior to the announcement at BlizzCon online.
Vicarious Visions, based in Albany, New York, has been working with Blizzard since last year on the Diablo franchise, including a planned remake of Diablo II, people familiar with the plans said. They asked not to be identified discussing private information.
Team 1 wanted to avoid repeating the mistakes of Warcraft III: Reforged on its next project, the remake of Diablo II. Shortly after the postmortem, however, Blizzard pulled that project from the team and put the division behind Diablo IV in charge. A group at Vicarious Visions is also working on the remake, which was known as Diablo II: Resurrected.
There has been a high demand for a Diablo 2 master for over a decade but previous Diablo 2 developers cast doubt on whether it was even possible. It was thought that so much source code had been lost it would be impossible to remaster. Blizzard North founder David Brevik had also stated in the past that moving the game from 2D to 3D would prove difficult.
The approach being taken by the new Blizzard / Vicarious Visions team to remaster Diablo 2 is somewhat ingenious in that the original game runs underneath a new engine. This means that the core of the original game remains intact. It also allows players to flip between the old and new graphics with the push of a key. More information on the game’s features can be found in the FAQ.
All previous Diablo games have had some kind of beta or alpha test and Diablo 2 Resurrected is no different. Blizzard has stated that there will be at least two testing periods. The first will be a single-player only technical test and the second a multiplayer stress test.
As Diablo 2 Resurrected is being launched on the new BattleNet platform instead of the old BattleNet where Diablo Classic currently resides, testing will be essential to facilitate a smooth launch.
It is rumoured that an Asian Diablo 2 Resurrected test will take place over four days on 9 April 2021. There have been more frequent updates in 2021 to the internal build being tested according to data shown on Blizztrack.
Possible Cause for Delay
The Diablo 2 Resurrected Release Date could be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 2020 and early 2021, many developers have had to push back release dates and patch updates. This is mainly due to developers having to work from home instead of the office. The good news is more of the population is being vaccinated and work may resume as normal by midsummer 2021.
The technical test will also play a key factor as to whether the Diablo 2 resurrected release date will make the busy holiday season. Assuming testing goes well, there should be no delay and the Diablo 2 Resurrected release date will make 2021.
