Diablo 2 Remaster Coming as Diablo 2 Resurrected?

The Diablo 2 remaster rumour mill is churning again. We’ve heard a Diablo 2 remaster can’t easily be done from the man behind the original but are Blizzard working on something after all?

French gaming site Actugaming posted a new article which claims that they’ve been tipped-off that a Diablo 2 remaster is currently in the works. The remaster is apparently going by the name of Diablo 2 Resurrected and is being developed outside of Blizzard at Vicarious Visions who also worked on the PC port of Destiny 2.

PureDiablo forum goer Jugulator has posted his thoughts on why there may be some substance to the rumours following leaked reveals prior to BlizzCon 2019. The only rumour that did not come to fruition last year was a Diablo 2 remaster.

When we spoke to David Brevik about the possibility of a remaster in 2017, he wasn’t convinced it was possible. He said it was likely many of the original assets have been lost. He also added it would be hard to move to 3D as it would fundamentally change the game. That wouldn’t be a problem though for a remaster.

There’s no doubt a remaster would be welcomed by fans prior to the launch of Diablo IV. Blizzard says they are looking at the first two games for inspiration for Diablo IV. Perhaps they see a remaster as an opportunity to prime new players for what’s to come. Here’s hoping anyway.

The supposed release date for this remaster is late 2020 but with everything that’s going on with COVID-19, that could be wishful thinking.

Jugulator covers why these may be more than speculation in his forum post so give that a read.
