Diablo has succeeded in a masterminded scheme to eat up all your free time. Get ready for non-stop dungeon-crawling because the original game from 1996 is now available to play for free from your web browser.
Developed by Diablo fans at Rivsoft, the shareware version of Diablo can be played by visiting https://diablo.rivsoft.net. It was created “based on source code reconstructed by GalaXyHaXz and devilution team.”
With the shareware version (aka “Diablo Spawn”), players can fight evil across the first two areas of the game’s dungeon using one of the three original hero classes, but some of the NPCs won’t be included. Additionally, the description on GitHub, where the files are hosted, states that “devilution keeps everything as it was originally designed. This goes as far as bugs and badly written code in the original game.”
However, if you own the full version of the game, purchased from sites such as GOG.com, then you can take your web adventure further. According to the site, you can drop “DIABDAT.MPQ” file from the game onto the loaded browser page to access the full game without restrictions from your browser.
There doesn’t appear to be a way to add Hellfire expansion content to the browser game, so you’ll have to fight the forces of darkness without those features.
It just goes to show, the Lord of Terror Diablo can be anywhere.
