Willowisp:
is a Monster
and an Undead
and a Guest Monster

Willowisps are Undead.

These floating, semi-ethereal monsters are widely dreaded for their potent lightning bolt attack. Willowisps are transparent, and can be hard to see when they move between attacks. Though they have a mana draining melee attack, it's best to take them on at close range, since their lightning bolts do much more damage and are not used in close.

Willowisps were extremely dangerous in v1.10, since an error in the programming made their lightning bolts hit many times at once.

Chain Lightning listed damage in Hell is 5-190. There is a bug where they deal their Melee Attack as part of their ranged attack, which is 42-108 and physical damage. Another hit is from a new missile bonus, and based on Mlvl 83 for Act 5 Hell Wisps, it's 166-169 lightning damage. So each lightning attack a Willowisp uses deals 213-467 damage, 42-108 of which is physical. And you can get hit five times per bolt, if it all goes through you. That's 1065-2335.

They're less deadly in v1.11, with that bug fixed.

  • All values are listed by difficulty level: Normal / Nightmare / Hell.

Statistics

Normal willowisps can not drop any type of armor or weapons, though they will drop potions and sometimes runes. Champions, bosses and their minions will drop items, and the Treasure Classes for them are given below.

  • The TC/Rune drops listed are the highest Treasure Class/Rune Group a normal monster of that type can drop.
    • TC Champions and Bosses can sometimes drop from the next higher group.
    • The max TC/Rune possible may depend on which level a monster spawns in, and can be lower than the maximum. See the item calculators to ascertain precisely what a monster from a given area can drop.

Offense

  • Willowisp lightning attacks are extremely dangerous since each bolt can land multiple hits. A bug causing massive stacking of these hits was fixed in v1.11, making the spell somewhat less deadly.
  • Their melee attack has a chance to steal mana as well as inflicting physical damage.

Defenses

Willowisps can not be life or mana leeched. They can not be chilled or frozen on Hell difficulty.

  • Regen Rate tells what % of a monster's hit points are recovered per second. Standard is 1.2/sec.
  • Blocking values are assigned to every monster in the game, but the ability is seldom enabled, so most monsters can not block (Hence the blocking % given on most Diablo II monster pages, including Blizzard's, is inaccurate.) When enabled, blocking tells what % of successful, blockable attacks will not damage the monster. Monsters need not carry a shield to block.
  • Drain Effectiveness tells what % of a character's mana and life steal apply to that monster. 100 is all, 0 is none.
  • Chill Effectiveness tells what % of a character's cold length applies to the monster. 100 is all, 0 is no freeze/chill at all.

Resistances

  • Resistances over 99% are listed as immunities and monsters will take no damage from that type of attack.
  • Immunities can be "broken" by skills that lower resistance, if the value drops below 99%. See the Resistances page for more details.
